Current opportunities for Schools
Here
are some suggestions for activities and details on how your school can
get involved with forthcoming BLC projects in the East Midlands.
We would also love to hear from you if you have your own ideas or would like help linking with a specific business organisation.
Our current opportunities for schools include:
European Challenge - 14 January 2011
Last
year we enabled the winning Young Enterprise company from our challenge
to go to the European Trade Fair in Lisbon. This year the prize will
send the winning company to Slovakia to meet and trade with Young
Enterprise representatives from all over Europe.
The
day, run in partnership with Routes into Languages and Young
Enterprise, will be focused on languages and marketing your product at
an international trade fair. Whilst there will be a significant
language input, members of your team need not necessarily be studying a
language. Your school has to be entered into the Young
Enterprise company programme to be able to enter this challenge and
must be an Aimhigher School.
If you are
unsure whether or not your school qualifies, please do ask us. Numbers
are limited, so there will be a preliminary application form and places
will be allocated on the quality of the application. Language and Business Masterclass - 11 February 2011
This
event, sponsored by Routes into Languages, will be a one day special challenge for gifted language students. Each
school is welcome to send up to 4 students from years 9 to 13. They
will then be sorted into teams with mixed ages and schools. Given that
it will be Chinese New Year, the day, which is run in partnership with
Routes into Languages, will have a Chinese theme. Please note that registration is only open to Aim Higher and National Challenge Schools at present. This event will take place at Brooksby Hall, near Melton Mowbray on Friday 11 February 2011.
The Challenge of the Games - 11 March 2011
This
is a joint challenge offered by BLC, Routes into Languages and the
London 2012 Young People’s Legacy. It will take place on Friday 11
March 2011. Your school team will pitch to a foreign national Olympics
team and will be set a series of tasks relating to hosting a pre-games
training camp.
The winning team will have the
opportunity to visit the Olympic Park and the LOCOG (Olympics) offices
in Canary Wharf. We welcome applications from any Year group but expect
it will appeal to Year 10 and above. Registration by November 30th. Numbers limited and places will be allocated on the quality of the application.
Russia Day at The Long Eaton School - 21 March 2011
This
was a very successful day last year when we entertained students from 9
different schools to a concert by the Hermitage Ensemble from St.
Petersburg. Following the concert, the students were able to partake in
4 out of 8 different activities based on Russian language, culture or
business, which were run by our Business Language Champions. We
welcomed students from years 6 through to 13, and the event was
arranged so it would inspire both those learning Russian, and those who
were not. If you would like to take part in this year’s Russia Day,
please do let us know as soon as possible.
Languages and Export Day sponsored by UK Trade and Investment - Jan 2011 - date TBC
UK
Trade and Investment is a government organisation aimed at supporting
businesses to export overseas. Many of the trade advisers are excellent
linguists with significant experience of trading or living overseas. We
are delighted that UKTI East Midlands is putting aside this day to work
with students and we are sure that it will motivate many students to
consider a career in export.
We
are looking for teams of 4 with a minimum age of 14. The prize for
the winning team will be to fly a multi-million pound,
full motion flight simulator under the instruction of a professional
British Airways pilot. Numbers limited and places will be allocated on
the quality of the application. Opportunities for individual schools
Young Enterprise Industry Language Masterclass:
This
is a joint initiative where we team up with Young Enterprise to offer a
bespoke Masterclass centred around languages for either a half day or
full day, whatever the school would like. Alternatively it could be
aimed at linking languages up with another subject (e.g. Science, Art,
Music etc) We will design the day to suit you, Young Enterprise will
produce any materials and we will supply the Business Language
Champions to act as advisers on the day. Note, there will be a charge
associated with this to cover the design and materials.
Musubi Days at Loughborough University and around the region:
Every
term from now until the 2012 Olympics, South Wolds Language College
will be hosting a ‘Musubi Day’ at Loughborough University where the
Japanese Olympic Team will be training in preparation for 2012. These
days include Japanese language and culture, as well as a chance to
speak with Japanese athletes. They will be offered to Language Colleges
around the region, who will then be cascading their learning to other
schools in their area. If you are a language college, or are located
near to one that has been selected to go on a Musubi Day (whether
Primary or Secondary) then make sure you don’t miss out! The main
organiser of this is the London 2012 Legacy office in the East Midlands
together with South Wolds Community College.
Challenge of the Games – Day version for individual schools
A
version of the Challenge of the Games (known as the Olympic Challenge
last year) can also be delivered as a day seminar for individual
schools, with Business Language Champions in attendance to act as group
advisers. This can be offered anywhere in the region. If you’d like
this more as an enterprise challenge than sports focused, then we can
offer the opportunity for your students to be international fashion
designers for the day. Either version can be adapted to the Year group
and language level.
Lincolnshire Seminar Days
The
Lincolnshire Education Business Link Organisation can introduce a
language/cultural element to two of their school seminar days. One is
around developing a visitor centre/attraction for your town, and the
other is about a van factory wishing to set up a subsidiary
manufacturing plant in one of five possible countries (UK, USA, India,
Germany or Greece). To enable the language/cultural element we would
supply appropriate Business Language Champions. Note there will be a
charge associated with this.
World Trade Game
World
Trade games are great fun, adaptable for a wide age range, and can be
delivered in short, half day or full day versions. Short versions can
help students think about the way other cultures live and how they cope
with few resources, longer versions can include language and enterprise
elements as well. We will seek Business Language Champions to act as
group advisers.
