Business Language Champions 2008-2009

Over twenty schools and around sixteen businesses have been involved in the Business Language Champions programme so far this year.

Through one-on-one partnerships and roving ambassadors, we've been busy spreading the message that languages are a beneficial skill irrespective of the career paths you choose.

Here is just a taste of what's been going on in the region so far this year:

Classic Motos

As well as continuing the successful partnership with English Martyrs School, Lorraine Harris from Classic Motos has established a second partnership with Wreake Valley College. Lorraine has made numerous visits to both schools this year undertaking business related language activity with Year 9 and 10 students.

MAX Conflict Management

Mark Wingfield from MAX has successfully supported a number of schools and projects across the region this year. Mark engages the students in multilingual self defence workshops in either French or German. He has visited 6 schools to date this year and also held a workshop in Nottingham City Library for European Day of Languages.

RAF

The RAF has been a very successful BLC this year. Their multilingual staff have visited 4 schools and inspired students by showing a different side to the rewards that language fluency can bring.

Optima Training Ltd.

Optima, which offers language training for business, have formed a partnership with the Grove school in Newark and have visited the school to undertake interactive language-based sessions with students.

Fibretech

Fibretech has formed a successful partnership with Ashfield School based in Sutton in Ashfield. Together they have developed an ongoing cross-curricular project incorporating language, engineering and IT-based activities.

Castle Pumps

Edward Shaw from Castle Pumps, a fluent French speaker, engaged with Southwell Minster School on their day of Languages in January 2009. He is also planning to visit other schools across the region to share his experiences of languages in Business.

Speedo

Speedo is a new Business Language Champion and due to the large number of languages used in the business, will be forming a partnership with South Wolds School in Nottingham,which is a Specialist Language College.

French Living

Louise Luiggi, a fluent French speaker from this successful Nottingham restaurant, regularly lends her time to schools across the region. This year she has run workshops at South Wolds School, Colonel Frank Seely School and Southwell Minster.

Bta – Bespoke Training Associates

Trevor Lane from bta is an experienced overseas account manager for multinational companies. Although not a linguist himself, he has learnt first hand the value of having a language – and the problems not having one can bring. Trevor recently held a successful talk at Djanogly City Academy in Nottingham and plans to visit other schools across the region.

AST Language Services Ltd.

This translation agency has formed a partnership with Ellis Guilford School in Nottingham. The agency has a number of projects planned with the school, commencing with a first workshop in March 2009.

Maie Wilburn – Eures Advisor East Midlands

Maie Wilburn is a linguist with many years experience of advising on job placements. She has recently supported Queen Elizabeth School in Ashbourne on their careers day and plans to visit other schools across the region.

Roving Ambassadors

David Slyjex, Sally Fagan, Kiyoko Nash, Ray Taylor and Gordon Binnie are just a few of our ‘roving ambassadors’ who regularly make themselves available to attend language events and projects across the region. They have visited numerous schools already this year and we would like to thank them for their ongoing efforts.
