The UK Guide for International Workers - published by Multicultural UK, this guide aims to help international workers settle quickly and easily into the UK. It is full of practical advice from how to open a bank account to how to find accommodation as well as cultural information about living and working in the UK. The guide is priced at just £2 and can be ordered from Fractal Publishing.

Migrant Workers in the East Midlands Labour Market (2007) - This report provides a profile of international migrants in the East Midlands and their role in the regional labour market (pdf - 1.14 MB).

'Working in the UK: rights for migrant workers' - This TUC guide can be downloaded in pdf format from their website in Czech, English, Estonian, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, Russian, Slovak, French or Spanish.

'How to...' Guides - produced by the RLNs, these guides provide advice on intercultural skills, employing people with languages and accessing foreign language training.

Language Line - This company was set up to help people with short-term linguistic difficulties over the telephone. The client rings in, requests the desired language (there are over 150 languages available) and usually within a minute is connected to an interpreter. This service is available 24 hours per day. You can pay as you go against a credit card or set up an annual management fee account and extra support materials are available for organisations that sign up.

Culture Smart! Guides, from Kuperard Publishers, provide information on the attitudes, beliefs and behaviours in over 60 different countries. Priced at just £6.95, these guides help you to understand the culture of your migrant workers by making you aware of basic manners, common courtesies and sensitive issues.

Advice Guide: Migrant Workers - produced by the Citizens Advice Bureau this short guide gives information on 'what is a migrant worker' and explains their rights at work (pdf 54 KB).

Migrant workers in England and Wales: an assessment of migrant worker health and safety risks - produced by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), this report aims to uncover whether migrant workers are at an increased risk of workplace incidents due to lack of language skills, poor communication and limited knowledge of the UK health and safety system (pdf 1.6 MB).

HSE: telephone interpreting service - covering over 100 different languages.

HSE: Migrant Workers info - to help overseas workers and their employers understand their roles and responsibilities under British health and safety law. These pages are also available in a variety of languages.

HSE: Free leaflets in a variety of languages - by clicking on your desired language you will be able to view free health and safety leaflets available in that language.

Migrantworker.co.uk - Developed by South Holland District Council this website provides advice and guidance to migrant workers and employers of migrant workers. You can also access Podcasts, developed by the RLN, which include useful phrases in Russian, Polish and Lithuanian.

East Midlands Regional Migration Partnership - this partnership was set up "to provide a regional advisory, development and consultation function for member organisations from the statutory, voluntary, community and private sectors - for the co-ordination and provision of advice, support and services for migrants".

Migrant Gateway - this website provides advice, information and guidance for people who are thinking of coming to work in the UK, those who are already living here and employers of migrant workers.

The Home Office provides further guidance to UK employers on employing migrant workers. Their website gives details of work permit arrangements, useful links and support available to employers.

Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform - the BERR website provides information for Portuguese, Polish and Lithuanian citizens who want to work in the UK.

Equal Works - a European Social Fund initiative. It tackles discrimination and inequalities in the labour market, for those in work and those seeking work. Equal also includes actions to help the integration of asylum seekers. Activity is delivered through Development Partnerships (DPs).

Institute for Public Policy Research - The IPPR website provides asylum and migration fact files to increase public understanding.

The Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants - This independent national voluntary organisation campaigns for justice and combating racism in immigration and asylum law and policy.

Working Lives Research Institute - this new centre for research and teaching, based at the London Metropolitan University, undertakes socially committed academic and applied research into all aspects of working lives, emphasising equality and social justice and working for and in partnership with trade unions.

Citizens Advice Bureau - the Citizens Advice service has produced a good practice guide entitled 'Supporting migrant workers in rural areas' which can be downloaded from their website in pdf format.
