RLN International Communications Masterclass - May 2008

This year's RLN Masterclass, aimed at helping East Midlands businesses to improve their international communications, was held on Friday 16 May at the Park Inn, Nottingham.

It was a day packed to the gunnels with information, case studies and workshops all around the subject of communicating better overseas.

Chaired by ITV reporter Helen Finch (pictured below), the Masterclass was more popular than ever before.

Around 80 delegates enjoyed words of wisdom from Chris Stammers (Benoy), Jamie Thums (AES Seal), and workshops led by Ceris Burns (Ceris Burns International), Lesley Batchelor (Institute of Export) and Susan Hallam (pictured below) from Hallam Communications.

But the day also had a very interactive element with a cultural session from International House exploring, amongst other things, ideas around exclusion and disorientation, and three languages tasters in Turkish, Russian and Japanese – a great chance to try out latent language and pronunciation skills on fellow unsuspecting delegates. These tasters were carried out by Feride Alp (Middle East Association), Anna Velichkina (Albion Overseas) and Kiyoko Naish (pictured below) from Qi Concepts respectively.

So, a great, fun day all round, as captured brilliantly by photographer Malcolm Basing. But, importantly, also a chance to reflect on the (sometimes) thorny issues surrounding language and culture and to take away new ideas around best practice and sources of help.
