Seven-year-olds to take languages 12.03.07

Modern foreign language lessons are to be compulsory for the first time in England's primary schools.

A review by Lord Dearing, issued today, recommends that all children should learn a language from the age of seven. This should happen by 2010 as part of the next curriculum overhaul.

Our RLN Manager, Suzannah Hutton, welcomed the move saying that the region's businesses are crying out for increased language skills.

Suzannah said: "While demand for language skills is increasing in the workplace as more and more businesses deal with overseas suppliers and customers, there is not an equal supply from school leavers and graduates.

"Developing language learning at an early age should make up for the current drop-off post-14 and may well encourage more people to continue studying it to a higher level."
