Holgate goes international 16.11.07
Teachers from across Europe paid a special visit to Hucknall's Holgate Comprehensive School as part of an innovative scheme to create global links.
And the trip was perfectly timed. For they were on hand to help Holgate celebrate news that they have achieved the International School Award.
As part of the Comenius Project, Holgate have linked up with schools in Sweden, Spain, France and Romania - with the aim of sharing teaching styles and techniques to improve learning in IT (information technology) and language skills.
The government say all schools should create international links within the next five years. But Holgate are ahead of schedule.
Now they have been rewarded for their efforts and can proudly claim to have 'International Status' at least until 2010.
The five schools will work together for three years and, as part of the programme, they will look at how IT is taught to sixth-form students. They will also discuss with local employers the kind of skills that can be transferred to the world of work.
Holgate's project co-ordinator, Stephen Walker, said:
"For each of the teachers involved, it has been a challenge to communicate in the five project languages, although we have used French and English in the main.
"It has been interesting to compare the teaching methods and organisation of the five schools and to realise that there are a large number of similarities between the skills attitudes and aspirations of the 17-to-18-year-old students whom we teach."
