Region's pupils celebrate European Day of Languages 27.09.07
Schoolchildren around the region sang songs in a variety of languages, dressed in traditional costumes and sampled foods from around the world to mark the European Day of Languages.
Held annually on 26 September, the European Day of Languages is a Council of Europe initiative designed to promote and celebrate cultural and linguistic diversity.
Pupils in Leicester learnt songs from around the world and helped to make one little girl feel really special. Nine-year-old Natalia Starczewska who came to England from Poland a week ago, with barely a word of English, was welcomed by classmates at Herrick Primary School with a rendition of Panie Janie, a traditional Polish song.
One of Natalia's new classmates, Charisa Gandhi, nine, said: "We want to make her feel more welcome to the school so she gets on more easily.
"I think it's really important to learn a language so that we can get a better job when we grow up."
Meanwhile, teachers at Fritchley Primary School put a bit of va-va-voom into lessons when they organised a French day. Children donned red, white and blue for the occasion and took part in French games such as boules and were encouraged to speak in French.
Teacher Judith Lenord said the day was a huge success:
"Everyone really enjoyed themselves. They were full of it.
"They were tired at the end of the day after all the games we played but I think it was worth it."
