New campaign to attract tourists from northern Europe 12 May 2008
Wealthy French, German and Dutch tourists are being targeted in a £150,000 tourism campaign.
Potential visitors with bags of disposable income will be given the hard sell and urged to visit attractions such as Lincoln Cathedral and Burghley House, near Stamford.
The campaign called Discover England's East Midlands has been launched by East Midlands Tourism to highlight the best attractions that Lincolnshire has to offer.
A series of foreign language websites have now been set up and campaigns will be running in tourist offices in Paris, Berlin and Amsterdam plugging Lincoln's best sights.
Mike Baulcombe, marketing campaigns manager for East Midlands Tourism, said the region attracted more than 232,000 northern Europeans every year.
"We're targeting the French, Dutch and German touring market coming primarily into Hull from Zeebrugge and Rotterdam," he said.
"Lincolnshire is just across the Humber estuary so it's ideal as a first stop for them coming off the ferries.
"We're mainly focusing on 40-year-old couples who have high disposable incomes and can afford a few holidays a year.
"The Dutch market is a bit more family based."
The marketing campaign is being funded by £95,000 from East Midlands Tourism with the rest coming from Pamp;O Ferries and national tourism body VisitBritain.
Penny Baker, chief executive of Lincolnshire Tourism said: "The targeted markets of Germany, France and Holland have good transport links into the country and then into the region, from Eurostar to ferries from Zeebrugge to Hull.
"We know that visitors from northern Europe like Lincolnshire and many Dutch and Belgian travelers are real Anglophiles."
