Teaching at Number Ten! 02.01.08

Research into language learning in schools resulted in an invitation to Downing Street for a former Derby man.

Chris Evans, who grew up in Chaddesden and Spondon, now lives in Essex, where he is a history teacher.

His report outlines ways to rejuvenate language learning and argues that a wider range of languages should be offered.

Mr Evans said: "Languages are a very personal choice and it seems there's real interest in learning Japanese and Gaelic among the people I spoke to."

Mr Evans visited Downing Street to discuss his findings with Government officials.

Previously, he has been given an award by Waterford Crystal for promoting Gaelic and other minority languages.

Mr Evans is hoping to organise a conference in Derby later this year.
