The Business of Language East Midlands - Issue 8 January 2007

Hello to everyone, and Happy New Year!

Luckily we’ve just got through January 22nd. This is apparently(according to some statistics or other) the most depressing day of the year. The good news is, having got through it, things should belooking up for the next 12 months; however, for a certain Miss J Goody (and her cohorts in the BB house) the year may well go downhill from here.

I’m sure we don’t want to dwell overly on what happened in that pressure-cooker of a house somewhere in deepest, darkest North London, but for the RLN, one of whose chief roles is to help individuals and companies improve cross-cultural communication and relationships, it has been of real interest.

We are, therefore, very glad to bring you an article written by Zarine Jacob, a global leadership coach, with her thoughts on some of the issues raised. Our tips and tricks and this edition's quiz will also put the spotlight on India.

Elsewhere in the ezine we have a case study with an Eastern European flavour from the Northants firm Iseki Redivac, news from the RLN and CILT, a summary of the Dearing report, events information for the region and, as the saying goes, much, much more.

All that now remains is for you to read it…

With all best wishes from the RLN,

Suzannah

Editor

The Business of Language East Midlands - Issue 7 October 2006

Welcome to the Autumn edition of the RLN East Midlands e-zine.

With temperatures of around 60 degrees it certainly doesn't feel like the 'season of mists and mellow fruitfulness' and feels even less like there are only 55 days until you know what...

So, to keep your mind off the impending frenzied retail activities we have a great selection of articles, information and tips, all on the subject of language and cultural awareness.

This month has a Chinese feel to it with an enlightening article from Dr Kevin Lin of KL Communications about the problems around translating into Chinese, a case study from a Derbyshire firm who have really broken into the Chinese market and tips and tricks for doing business in China.

In particular it would be great if you could read the article about Languages Work, 'Your local school needs YOU!' We really need the help and support of local businesses to help us with this very important project.

On a more philosophical note we are pleased to feature a list of quotations which celebrate and promote language and are themselves great advertisements for the power of language.

But just when you thought this was a festive free zone, we have thrown in a Christmas/New Year quiz to get you up to speed with what other people around the world will be doing on 25th December and 1st January.

A final request to all subscribers, it would be great to have feedback on any aspect of this e-zine, so please send your comments or any ideas for future content to info@rln-eastmidlands.com

Please also feel free to send on the e-zine to anyone else you think may be interested in what we have to say.

Best regards and, dare I say it, have a great Christmas!!
